Unaccompanied Ballad Singing

Norm Williams

(Anyone who likes to sing or wants to)

There is a rich tradition of unaccompanied “ballad singing” in the southern Appalachian Mountains which includes songs from Scots-Irish, European and African traditions as well as story-songs and sacred hymns.

In this class we’ll introduce you to some of these ballads and sacred songs as well as the unique vocal techniques that are found in this style of folk music. All songs will be taught by ear, so a recording device will come in handy.
